At 1835 hours on the night of 15 October 1941Wellington X9978 took off from Feltwell detailed to bomb Cologne, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. It was later established that the aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at
2117 hours at Grevenbicht (Limburg) on the east bank of the Maas River, 8 kms north west of Sittard, Netherlands. The crew of six members had been killed.
