At 2251 hours on 22 May 1944, Lancaster LL723 took off from Linton-on-Ouse to attack Dortmund, Germany. The aircraft was shot down by a night-fighter and crashed on the north side of the Lippe about 4 kms from the centre of Haltern. All the crew members were killed.
