At 1724 hours on the night of 15 February 1944 Halifax LW341 took off from Elvington detailed to bomb Berlin. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after-take off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft crashed in the Baltic Sea and all the crew members were killed. Only Flight Sergeant Newell’s remains were recovered.
