On 27 July 1942 Hurricane BN539 flown by Sergeant Newick was in a formation of aircraft which were surprised by 5 Me109Fs when taking off at 1830 hours from Landing Ground No 172. BN539 crashed at position 409894 (map coordinates) and Sergeant Newick was killed.
