Flying Officer Nivison-Smith was the pilot of No. 502 Squadron Whitley V P5064 that crashed about 2 miles east of at RAF Kinloss just after take-off. Flying Officer Nivison-Smith and Squadron Leader Scott were from No. 612 Squadron. No. 502 Squadron had recently converted from Anson aircraft to Whitley aircraft and No. 612 Squadron was in the process of converting with the No. 502 Squadron aircraft being used for familiarisation and training.
