At 0030 hours on 7 August 1943 a Wellington aircraft of No. 142 Squadron took off from Kairouan to attack Messina Beaches. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it did not return to base. It was concluded in 1948 that the missing crew members had lost their lives at sea.
