At 0820 hours on 6 October 1943, Kittyhawk A9-158 flown by Flight Sergeant Piggott crashed three miles north-west of the Mildura aerodrome and he was killed. The aircraft was carrying out normal aerobatic exercises. It was seen at about 5,000 feet doing a series of slow rolls, when on the third roll while on its back, the nose appeared to drop and the aircraft appeared to spin vertically, turning slowly, but losing height rapidly until it crashed and burned on impact.
