On 24 August 1918, Cadet Pillow flying solo was killed at Leighterton in the crash of RE8 aircraft D/4977. The Court of Enquiry determined that the cause of the accident was that he attempted to turn without sufficient flying speed, causing the nose to drop and the machine to spin. The height was not sufficient to regain control before hitting the ground.
