At 1050 hours on 7 September 1944, Kittyhawk A29-147 flown by Flying Officer Powell crashed at the Mildura aerodrome and he was killed. After attempting to make a forced landing, he proceeded to go around again, but the aircraft stalled when at a height of about 100 feet and crashed and burned.
