On 16 March 1917, Second Lieutenant Powell resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army.

On 24 April 1917, Second Lieutenant Powell, flying Maurice Farman Shorthorn aircraft 7363, was killed at Northolt when he appeared to lose control and the aircraft side-slipped and nose-dived into the ground.
