At 0551 hours on 16 July 1943 Whitley BD276 took off from St Eval detailed to carry out an anti-submarine patrol over the Bay of Biscay. At 1310 hours a signal was received from the aircraft “MTB1 early 60 minutes”. At 1408 hours the aircraft touched down but ballooned back into the air and before the situation could be remedied the bomber crashed into a parked Hampden belonging to No. 1404 Meteorological Flight. In the explosion that followed another of the Flight’s Hampden aircraft was destroyed. Five of those on board BD276 were killed in the accident and two were injured.
