At 0800 hours on the 18 May 1944, Spitfire EP511 crashed approximately seven miles north east of Ismailia, Egypt, and Flight Lieutenant Rivett was killed. EP511 collided in mid-air with Spitfire ES227. Flight Lieutenant Rivett as instructor and leader had arranged and briefed a section of four Spitfires to carry out an attack on three Marauders. After making an attack, M2 in the formation flown by Bailey broke away downwards to starboard and collided with Rivett’s aircraft knocking off its tail. Rivett’s aircraft then spun down and crashed in flames and he was killed. Bailey landed uninjured but with a damaged propeller.
