On 17 October 1941, Spitfire X4904 flown by Pilot Officer Sly crashed at Maddy Moss, north-west of Dollar, and the he was killed. The aircraft failed to return following a section attack exercise after flying in formation between Cupor and Leuchers, Scotland.
