On 22 August 1944, Leading Aircraftman survived the loss of Norseman A71-1 in which Flight Sergeant Frank Henry Rossiter (432268) and two other RAAF members were killed.
On 23 August 1944, Leading Aircraft Stormont, a Guard, is believed to have accidently thrown petrol onto a fire and he received second degree burns to his abdomen, shoulders and arms in the resting flare-up when his clothing caught fire. He died at the No. 105 Australian Light Field Ambulance three days later.
