At 0109 hours on the morning of 8 May 1944, Mosquito DZ478 took off from Woodhall Spa detailed to bomb the airfield at Tours, France. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down and crashed at Mont Couvern, south of Tours, France and both the crew members were killed.
