At 1720 hours on the night of 18 November 1943, Stirling EF155 took off from Downham Market detailed to bomb Mannheim, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off, and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed at Edenkoben, 9 kms north of Landau in der Platz. Five of the crew members were killed and three became Prisoners of War.
