On 23 April 1917, Second Lieutenant Wilkinson resigned from the Australian Army and accepted a Commission in the British Army.

On 28 March 1918, Second Lieutenant Wilkinson (Observer) and Captain Ernest William Monk RFC (Pilot) flying in Armstrong Whitworth FK8 aircraft C3661 were shot down and killed during aerial combat while on an artillery patrol.
