On 14 October 1942 a Spitfire aircraft from No. 1435 Squadron flown by Flight Sergeant Williams was reported missing on air operations. At 0940 hours about 60 enemy aircraft approached Malta on a raid and Flight Sergeant Williams was lost during the ensuing battle. This raid was the fifth of 16 mounted that day.
