Sergeant Winston’s family settled in the UK when he was 8 years old. The family name was changed by deed pole from Weinberg to Winston in 1938.

On 27 June 1940, Blenheim R3778 took off from Wyton at 1655 hours to reconnoitre movements along the Guinea-Bolougne-Nesles-Dannes road and was lost without trace.
