At 1710 hours on the night of 22 November 1944 Wellington LP574 took off from the Tortorella landing ground to attack the marshalling yards at Szombathely, Hungary. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. Returning crews reported enemy night fighters active in the target area and some aircraft were seen shot down. In 1947 a Missing Research and Enquiry Unit reported that LP574 had exploded in the air presumably as a result of enemy aircraft and crashed at Kuriapuzza on 22 November 1944. All the crew members had been killed.

The crew members of LP574 were:

Sergeant Wilfred Carter (1622293) (RAFVR) (Bomb Aimer)
Flight Sergeant Robert Charles Chesterman (425763) (RNZAF) (Wireless Air Gunner)
Flight Sergeant Charles Havill Cockram (1852449) (RAFVR) (Air Gunner)
Flight Sergeant Jack Harrison Emmott (422905) (Pilot)
Flight Sergeant Leonard Roy Young (424815) (Navigator)
